Getting the conditions right
An important part of application performance testing is to conduct such tests in conditions that realistically reflect the environment in which the application is ultimately expected to operate.
More applications are running over the network
In order to achieve greater cost efficiencies many organizations are looking to consolidate their IT into larger central or regional data centers, rather than having it fully distributed. Often virtualized servers are employed too.
At the same time, organizations are increasingly providing applications, that previously may only have been available within their headquarters, out the field (branch offices, shops, mobile workers etc).
As a result, more and more applications are being delivered over Wide Area Networks (WANs), wireless LANs, Mobile (GPRS, 3G, 4G, LTE…), Cloud or Satellite networks.
LAN ‘lab’ testing isn’t realistic
Unfortunately, when it comes to software, performance testing is frequently conducted over the simple Local Area Networks (LAN) of the test lab. These LANs are normally very fast and reliable and bear very little resemblance to the WANs, wireless LANs, Mobile, Cloud or Satellite networks that the application is going to operate in.
Recreating realistic network conditions - Use a Virtual Test Network (Network Emulator)
A Digital Defined Test Network from iTrinegy behaves like a real network environment but can be deployed in the same room as your normal test rig. They allow you to virtualize a wide variety of different network conditions (bandwidth restrictions, latency & jitter, packet re-ordering, packet error & packet loss etc.) and networks (WANs, Wireless, GPRS, 3G, Cloud, Satellite, MPLS and Routed etc.) so that you can safely test your application during the application design & development stages and the pre-deployment & QA testing stages and be confident that it is going to behave as you expected when rolled into the production environment.
